Ten of the Best Law Schools in Texas

We were discussing the best last schools in the U.K., the other day, and we thought it a good idea to make some comparisons in some other places in the world – Texas – for example; we thought let’s start there. So, here are ten of the best Law Schools that Texas has to offer, and in no particular order:

1. Baylor Law School, Waco, Texas

This is the oldest school in Texas and is affiliated to Baylor University also in Waco. The American Bar Association has accredited this school since 1931. Established in 1849, Baylor Law School was the first Law School in Texas and also one of the first, west of the Mississippi River.

Baylor Law School is situated on the banks of the Brazos River, and because of its smart architecture, it makes a beautiful sight on the approach.

2. South Texas College of Law Houston, Houston, Texas

This College is relatively modern compared to the above. It’s a private Law School founded back in 1923. The American Bar Association accredited it. We are given to understand that the total costs of attendance (indicating the total cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses); st South Texas for the 2017-2018 academic year was $ 56 000.00.

3. Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Dallas, Texas

Dedman School of Law is commonly referred to as SMU. It’s a prominent professional graduate law school that was founded in February 1925. It is a private law school and, to date, it has produced no less than five Fortune 500 Chief Executives (the most of any school according to Business Insider); also several Justices of the Texas Supreme Court, federal and state judges, and several U.S. and state government officials, senators, and representatives graduated from here – quite an achievement!

4. St Mary’s University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas

St Mary’s University School of Law was established in 1927 and is a private Catholic School. The Law School has three different and separate Law Centers:

The Center for Terrorism Law

The Center for International Legal Studies

The Center for Legal and Social Justice.

5. Texas A&M University School of Law (and the acquired) Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, Fort Worth Texas

History: This was first established in 1989 as the Dallas/Fort Worth School of Law. The School of Law became part of Texas Wesleyan University in 1992, and it was acquired by Texas A&M University in 2013. Perhaps you’ll find the Timeline quite interesting:


1989: The Dallas/Fort Worth School of Law began in August as a night Law School Situated in Irving, Texas. The school’s first-class had only 93 students.

1991: The Law School opened its day division.

1992: Texas Wesleyan University acquired the Law School.

1997: The Law School moved to its current location in downtown Fort Worth at 1515

Commerce St.

1999: The ABA grants full accreditation to the Law School.

2012: The Law School becomes a member of the Association of American Law Schools.

2013:  Texas A&M University acquires Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, which then becomes Texas A&M University School of Law.

6. University of Houston Law Center, Houston, Texas

This University was founded in 1947 and, the Law Center is one of 12 Colleges in the University. It is accredited by the American Bar Association and, also, is a member of the Association of American Law School.

The Law Center offers several Law Clinics for the Upper Division Students:

7. The University of Texas Law School, Fort Worth, Texas

This is an ABA-accredited Law School located in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. It was founded in 1989 and is a member of the Association of American Schools.

In 2019 the A&M Law School was ranked amongst the most selective.

Their publications are: Texas A&M Law Review and Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

8.Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, Fort Worth, Texas

This Texas A&M University School of Law is an ABA-accredited Law School located in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. The Law School is a member of the Association of American Law Schools and offers the Juris Doctor degree through its full-time and part-time programs.

9. Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Houston, Texas

The Thurgood Marshall School of Law was first established in 1946. It is part of Texas Southern University; Thurgood Marshall School of Law is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the Association of American Law Schools.

It has three Legal Clinics:

Earl Carl Institute for Legal and Social Justice, inc; An institute dedicated to identifying potential implementable solutions to legal and social issues disproportionately impacting minority communities.

Center for Legal Pedagogy. It serves as a study and creation centre of instructional design for legal education.

Institute for International and Immigration Law: An Institute dedicated to providing specialized academic and practical legal training for students planning a career in international or immigration law.

10. Texas Tech University School of Law, Lubbock, Texas

The Earl Carl Institute for Legal and Social Policy, Inc; was established in 1992 by Professor Marcia Johnson as a research and writing think tank at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. It is a non-profit corporation which is exempt from taxation according to 501(cc)(3), of the Internal Revenue Code.

An interesting point to note here is that the Institution, named in honor of Professor Earl Carl who was a  founding faculty member of the Law School, tell us that Professor Carl, who was blind from an early age, graduated from Fisk University before going on to earn his law degree from Yale University Law School. The write up goes on to say that: He is a human symbol that people can accomplish whatever they are willing to, despite the odds. His achievements remind us that we are limited by the barriers we chose not to overcome!


In order to be considered for admission as a first-year student as applicant must register with the Law School Admission Council and the Credential Assembly Service. They should take the Law School Admission Test or Graduate Record Examination and demonstrate that they have earned a Bachelor’s Degree from a University.

Texas is considered to be one of the best places to live in America right now. It has a robust oriented economy and expects to see job growth quite soon. Housing in Texas is affordable and, the weather is just great! How can you go wrong in Texas?
